*TRAX is the magazine for fitness professionals

If you’re looking to lose weight without limiting your choices, the GL diet makes the perfect pick for weight loss options. While GI focuses on how fast the carbs (sugars) in food raise blood sugar levels, the GL diet measures the quality of carbs present – a much more accurate method of gauging the effect of food on the body. Written by top dietician Nigel Denby and online dieting company founders Tina Michelucci & Deborah Pyner, The 7-Day GL Diet includes: food lists with many 'banned' items back on the menu, three 7-day plans to suit all lifestyles from fast and friendly and veggie friendly, to foodie friendly for the more leisurely gourmets, quick reference shopping lists and exercise plans to promote a healthier new you.

The 7-day GL Diet extract:

What is the ultimate diet? It’s a claim that is so often made. I believe it should be based on sound scientific evidence, be easy to follow, safe to use and it should work! My choice is the glycaemic load (GL) diet and this extract from my book The 7-Day GL Diet will help you to lose a few pounds for Christmas if you follow it for a week. But once you feel the benefits of eating well and losing weight, you may want to carryon. It doesn’t have to be a short-term quick fix - it can be a way of life.

The GL diet is a more sophisticated version of the glycaemic index (GI) diet. The GI diet is based on distinguishing between “good” and “bad” carbohydrates. Good carbohydrates are low in sugar, or release their sugar slowly, providing energy throughout the day. High GI foods - for example, sweets and most types of chocolate- are digested quickly, which means that your energy levels soar but then soon dip, causing lethargy and hunger.

The problem with the GI diet is that some very healthy items are excluded, for example, parsnips, watermelon, pumpkin and broad beans. It measures the glycaemic effect of the amount of food you’d need to give you 50g of carbohydrates, which, for example, would be a whole watermelon. The GL diet, however, lets you eat them because it works out the GI of a normal portion size.

A GL score is the glycaemic index for a normal portion of food; for example, a slice of watermelon not the whole melon. Three slices of bread, a high-carb food, contain about 50g of carbs, but to get this from parsnips, a low-carb food, you’d need to eat 500g - a huge quantity. Eating this amount would send blood sugar sky high, which is why parsnips have a high GI rating of 97 but a low GL rating of 7.8.

Because the GL is based on the quantity of food which you are likely to eat, it is a more realistic reference than the GI.

This plan includes three meals and two snacks a day to prevent hunger pangs, as well as ensuring that nutritional needs are met. Eat every four hours to help balance blood sugar levels.

Diet Freedom: The GL Diet
*Health magazine distributed in health food stores

It's a clever title - the notion of 'diet freedom' is incredibly compelling! Based on glycaemic load, carbs aren't out of bounds and calories don't need to be counted, protein isn't piled high to dangerous levels and above all else, the emphasis is on healthy eating as well as weight loss. It explores negative thought patterns, exercise, taming temptation, eating well through your busiest times as well as looking at focused supermarket shopping ... finding health choices for eating out. This is about lifestyle changes rather than starvation plans and is bound to become a source of inspiration for many interested in low glycaemic eating.

GL Diet Smart choices for stylish slimmers – Front page

Say goodbye GI and hello GL - the new, improved diet for savvy slimmers, a simple nutritious regimen that cuts out calorie-counting and keeps the weight off.

You’ve probably already heard about the GI diet. It came hot on the heels of Atkins and now eight of the ten bestselling diet books are GI related. It’s recognised as being a healthier, less restrictive diet than the Atkins regimen that had dieters gorging on high-fat, high-protein foods.

The GI diet is based on distinguishing between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ carbohydrates. Good carbohydrates are low in sugar, or release their sugar slowly, providing energy at a constant level throughout the day. High-GI foods are digested quickly, which means that your energy levels soon dip, causing hunger and lethargy.

But now the GI diet has been superseded by a more sophisticated version: the glycaemic load (GL), which shows that some “bad” GI foods could actually be beneficial. Some fruit and vegetables are high in sugar and off limits to GI dieters, despite their good nutritional content. Carrots, for instance, come in at 75 on the GI rating, which ranks it alongside ‘bad’ foods such as white bread (70) and white rice (72). But if you look at carrots’ GL rating, it’s much lower and, therefore, better.

What the GI rating doesn’t do is take into account the portion sizes that we normally eat. For instance, the amount of bread containing 50g of carbs is about three slices, but to get 50g of carbs from carrots, we would need to eat almost 700g (1½lb) at one sitting - unlikely, unless you’re a donkey; 100g would be nearer the mark. A normal “portion” of carrots would rate a very low 5.25 on the GL, so enjoy - they are good for you and won’t make you store fat.

Watermelon is another example of a food that has a high GI but a low GL. It scores 72 on the GI rating, but to consume enough of it to reach 50g of carbs would equate to eating a whole watermelon, not something we’d do at one sitting. We’re more likely to have a ‘portion’ of watermelon, about 120g, which contains only 6g of carbs. So the GL of watermelon works out at only 4.32 per portion, which means it is a very low-GL food to be enjoyed. The same goes for many other foods that have a high GI overall but a low GL per average-sized ‘portion’, which means more delicious food choices.

So, if you have been following a low-GI diet, you will find a low-GL plan much less restrictive and more accurate.
