Why all supplements are not equal
Many of the cheaper, poor quality brands contain large quantities of fillers and other non-essential ingredients. The actual vitamin and mineral levels are often very low and in a form not easily absorbed by your body so you could be wasting your time and money.
Vitamin and mineral supplements like calcium should be in the form of citrates, ascorbate or polynicotinates because they are more easily absorbed by the body. Avoid chlorides, sulphates, carbonates and oxides as they are not so easily assimilated and mineral supplements in this form may pass through the body without being absorbed.
For instance, calcium in the form of calcium carbonate isn't one of the best absorbed vitamin forms because calcium carbonate is just chalk! Far better to boost your calcium intake with calcium citrate - the form best absorbed by the body.
What supplements should not contain
Make sure that your supplements don't contain - Artificial Colours, Artificial Flavours, Soya, Artificial Preservatives, Artificial Sweeteners, Benzoates, Sugars, Lactose, Talc, Gluten, Yeast or Sorbitol.
An easy rule is to make sure you buy vitamins, minerals and herbs as capsules rather than tablets. Capsules are usually better because they are filled with only the essential nutrients. Tablets on the other hand can include a variety of fillers, binders and bulking agents. But remember, always check the label.
Why are supplements necessary?
At Diet Freedom we are very aware that many people buy supplements and end up with a cupboard full, often not knowing what they are for, whether they are taking too much or too little or whether they actually needed them in the first place!
We do recommend taking a good quality multi vitamin and mineral supplement as an insurance policy but certainly don't think that we all need to take a vast range of different supplements as eating a healthy and varied diet can provide most of what we need. However, again we are all different and supplementation can be very effective indeed for specific conditions.
